How to Talk About Enhanced Personal Care During Holiday Visits

Holiday visits often bring families together for more than celebrations. They’re also one of the few times each year when adult children get to see how their parents are managing day to day. Over the course of a long weekend or several days together, you may notice changes that weren’t obvious during phone calls or video chats.

Maybe your mom needs help getting up from a chair, or your dad is struggling to keep track of medications. Bathing, getting dressed, or preparing meals seems more difficult than it used to be. You may even find that a recent illness or fall has made it harder for them to maintain the level of independence they once enjoyed.

If you’ve noticed these changes, the holidays can be a good opportunity to start talking about enhanced personal care.

Start with What You’ve Seen

Conversations tend to be more productive when they’re based on specific observations rather than assumptions. Instead of saying, “I don’t think you can live here anymore,” try sharing what you’ve noticed. Focusing on facts helps keep the discussion centered on solving problems rather than assigning blame.

Some conversation starters include:

  • “I noticed it was painful for you to climb the stairs.”
  • “You mentioned you’ve missed a few medications recently.”
  • “It seems like getting dressed has become more tiring.”

Ask How They’re Feeling

After sharing your observations, give your parent the opportunity to talk. Ask open-ended questions like:

  • How have you been feeling lately?
  • What parts of your day have become more difficult?
  • Is there anything you wish you had help with?
  • What would make life feel easier?

You may discover they’ve already been frustrated by some of these challenges but haven’t wanted to worry the rest of the family.

Focus on the Support, Not the Label

Framing the conversation around receiving the right level of help (not losing independence) can make it feel much less intimidating. Many people hear the words “senior living” and immediately assume they’re giving up their independence. But enhanced personal care is different.

It’s designed for older adults who remain active and engaged but need more hands-on assistance with daily activities than traditional assisted living provides. That extra support can help someone continue enjoying the things they love while reducing the physical demands of everyday life.

Make It a Family Conversation

The holidays often mean siblings and extended family members are together in one place, which creates an opportunity to discuss concerns openly and make sure everyone understands what’s happening.

It’s important, however, that your parent remains part of the conversation. Decisions about future care should be made with them whenever possible, not for them.

Talk About What They Could Gain

When people understand how additional support can improve their quality of life, they’re often more open to exploring their options. Instead of focusing on everything that’s become difficult, talk about what enhanced personal care could make possible.

You might discuss:

  • More confidence with daily routines
  • Help with bathing, dressing, and medication management
  • Less physical strain each day
  • Opportunities to socialize and participate in activities
  • Peace of mind for both your parent and the rest of the family

Don’t Wait for an Emergency

Many families begin researching enhanced personal care after a hospitalization, fall, or other health crisis. While those events sometimes make a move necessary, waiting until then often leaves little time to consider different options.

The National Institute on Aging recommends paying attention to changes in an older adult’s ability to manage daily activities, making it worthwhile to begin planning before a crisis occurs. Starting the conversation during the holidays gives everyone time to ask questions, visit communities, and make thoughtful decisions together.

Remember That This May Take Time

It’s unlikely your parent will make a decision after one conversation. And that’s okay.

The goal is to open the door, not force it. Give your loved one time to think about what you’ve discussed, ask questions, and share their concerns. Continuing the conversation over time often leads to better decisions than trying to resolve everything during a single holiday visit.

Even if your parent isn’t ready to move right away, the holidays can be the beginning of a plan.

Researching communities, touring together, and understanding what enhanced personal care offers can make future decisions much less stressful. If additional support becomes necessary later, your family will already have a better understanding of the options available.

Talking about enhanced personal care isn’t about focusing on limitations. By approaching the conversation with patience, empathy, and respect, you can help your parent see that accepting a little more help may also mean gaining more freedom, confidence, and peace of mind.

If your family is beginning to explore enhanced personal care, Priority Life Care is here to answer your questions. Contact your local community to schedule a tour and learn how personalized support can help your loved one maintain comfort, confidence, and the highest possible quality of life.

For families in Jamison, Pennsylvania, a holiday conversation about senior living can begin with the experiences your parents want to keep enjoying. Time at Peace Valley Park or shopping at The Shops at Valley Square may be part of what makes Bucks County feel like home. As you discuss Bridges at Warwick, ask how they would like family visits, local outings, and familiar traditions to fit into their next chapter.

My mother has been warmly welcomed by the staff at the Bridges of Warwick. The executive Director, Catherine Williamson works tirelessly to meet the needs of every resident. She too is fairly new to the community establishing a high end quality control plan. The management team empowers the caring staff to continue to rise up and give their best performance daily! There is a sense of “we can”! I am forever grateful to Catherine and the Bridges of Warwick staff for taking a chance on bettering the life of my dear mother. Thank you.

The Bridges has proven to be the right choice for my mother and our family. Like so many who are faced with few choices when entering the residential health care system, we had our short stays in facilities that were simply unacceptable. But the Bridges has been absolutely wonderful. The facility is always clean, the nursing staff is invested in the residents' care, the assistance staff is always dedicated and responsive, and the administration is professional, kind, and accommodating. Most importantly, every resident is safe, well cared for, and genuinely loved by their caretakers. There are interesting activities all day, every day. Even the food is good! But what makes the Bridges the right choice is an honest and accountable administration, a staff that genuinely cares, and a safe environment in which my mother feels safe and is well cared for. Thank you, Kim, Nick, and everyone at the Bridges!

I shadowed a visiting physician here at the Bridges and spoke with some of the nursing staff as part of my studies. I was impressed by the friendly disposition of the care team here. Their cordiality is surpassed only by their devotion to delivering a high standard of compassionate care. The residents themselves were very pleasant and seemed happy to see us when we came in for our checkups, and it was evident that the staff at the Bridges take great care to ensure that the residents receive the help that they need.

Wonderful place and would highly recommend to anyone looking.
